From 2016 until now, Dr Phil Friend has been Chair of the Board of Trustees here at RiDC.

As he prepares to step down from this position next month, he shares his reflections and says goodbye for now.

"As I prepare to step back from my role as Chair of the Research Institute for Disabled Consumers, I find myself reflecting on a journey filled with both challenges and triumphs. It has been a profound honour to serve and collaborate with our devoted trustees, innovative researchers, dedicated staff, and the insightful, committed members of our disabled consumer panel."

"I began this journey as a trustee of the Research Institute for Consumer Affairs back in January 2010, and in 2016, I was privileged to take over the reins from Graham Corbett as Chair. Over these years, we’ve navigated financial constraints, political uncertainties, a rebranding and restructuring, office relocations, and the unprecedented global crisis brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Through each of these trials, our team's resolve never wavered, and for that, I am deeply thankful to each member, past and present.

"Despite all these hurdles, we've achieved remarkable milestones. Our long-standing Car Measurement Information project continues to empower disabled motorists with crucial data, enhancing their mobility and independence. More recently, our research on electric vehicle charging has set new standards, ensuring that charging equipment is accessible to all.

"A crowning achievement of my tenure has been the establishment and growth of our Disabled Consumer’s Panel, which now boasts nearly five thousand members. This panel has ensured that the voices of disabled and older consumers remain at the core of our mission, shaping everything we do.

"As I pass the baton to the next Chair, I do so with a heart full of confidence in the RIDC’s bright future. To my successor, I offer this piece of advice: always listen to and prioritise the voices of disabled individuals—whether on our Board, within our staff team, or on our panel.

"Looking ahead, I am eager to dedicate more time to my personal passions—improving my writing skills, podcasting, and, most importantly, watching my grandchildren grow and explore their own paths in life.

"To everyone at RIDC, I extend my deepest gratitude for a journey that has been immensely rewarding. Here's to new beginnings and to the continued success of an organisation that remains a beacon of innovation and inclusivity.

"Keep striving to make a difference in the lives of every consumer we serve.

"Thank you."
